Burnt Over Country

Burnt’ Over Country was written for Jeff Gavett and Charlotte Mundy in the Summer of 2026 for a concert presented by QBit. The piece integrates electronics with the two voices to explore the story of the Fox Sisters and 19th-century American spiritualism. The piece begins with…

“Western New York State, A burned over district, where a wild excitement of spiritual fervour took hold. The Millerites, the Shakers, the Oneida society, spread like wildfire. Mystical communications proliferated and the norms of society and humanity expanded out from the flames.”
