Against the Morning was written for Banff Centre and Gruppo Montebello. The work pays homage to Schoenberg’s Farben (third movement of 5 Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 16), using light reflecting on water as a visual analogy. The work quotes, arranges, and derives musical processes and thematic material from Farben, and incorporates Webern’s arrangement of the work for two pianos, re-arranged for this instrumentation.
